id Software's key event to see Doom 3 roll-out proper? Quake 4 chatter begins…
Following Doom 3's surprisingly low-profile video-only showing at E3 this year, it seems that developer id Software has selected QuakeCon for the game's full live public test.

id Software, the great granddaddies of the first-person shooter, will be hosting this year's QuakeCon, the annual frag-fest that pits LAN-obsessed clans against each other to battle it out (urgh!) for money.

However, increasingly, the event is being used to show new game content, both to the public and behind closed doors. This year, the ever-productive id rumour mill mentions both Doom 3, playable to the public for the first time, and interestingly, the full unveiling of the firm's latest multiplayer offering, Quake 4.

Also revealed over the weekend was the tournament schedule and prize purse allocated by id. An impressive $125,000 is on offer in total, with games of Castle Wolfenstein and Quake 3 Arena in the usual breakdown of capture the flag, deathmatch and so on.

A total of 4,000 gamers will descend on the Adams Mark Hotel in downtown Texas, late August. We'll bring you coverage of anything breaking then.
