I don't think it's broken per se. However, I do think there is room for discussion on how the relationship between PR and the media works and how it is perceived by the wider video game community.

It depresses me how fractious the relationship between the press and their audience is. The unsavoury brouhaha of the last couple of days has done nothing to bring writers and their audience closer together. It also highlights the fact, rightly or wrongly, that there is a feeling that corruption exists on some level. If any positive is to come out of this nasty business, it's that the press should either be more transparent in how they work with PR, or educate us "punters" regarding how the relationship works.

Let's just say I worked as an intern at a major publication and as a Nintendo fan, I was downright frowned upon. There were definitely facts intentionally left out, skewed or got too much coverage. Nothing was fair or balanced, but this is what the publication wanted.
