Well personally, if I can't get a PS2 compatible PS3 I won't be getting one at all. And I can't afford a PS3 until after Christmas. So I might not bother at all. I can't stand the thought of putting a PS2 disc into a PS3 and getting an error message. That's hardly "next-gen", and I'd always look down on it as an inferior version of a mighty console. I dunno where I am gonna find £350 from before the proper PS3s sell out, so I am buggered. Thanks, Sony, for really screwing up the transition into the next-generation. It should have been so simple, but the company seems to be over-run by idiots.

Well i work in Gamestation and i know for a fact we've yet to sell a single 40GB model, in the past week since the price drop we've shifted about 20-30 60GB models and now we're out of stock with no one wanting a 40GB.

I didn't really want a PS3 when they came out. But, in honesty, when I heard that if I was going to get a backwardly compatible model it would have to be now, I considered it.

An odd reaction, given that I didn't really want one in the first place. I wonder if other people have had a similar response? It's a great tactic from Sony to boost sales in the short term, which could lead to all-important sales over the Christmas period for games and accessories, not to mention stripping people of disposable income to spend on other consoles.

(I've since come to my senses, and concluded I really, really don't need a PS3, and if I want to play PS2 games so badly, I'll use the PS2 sitting in the corner.)

Well, I think Sony has made a big mistake with the new no-compatible ps3. If they based their decision on some stats they might be wrong.
As the ps2 has more than 2500 games available, the ps3 could really enjoy the nostalgic experience because that is what I am talking about.
No-compatible ps3 will enjoy the next generation games but unfortunately there have not been created yet.

They still have the 60GB ps3. it is compatible with ps2 games. the 40GB one is only to reduce price and to compete with the 360 elite and to attract gamers that didn't have any other of Sony's consoles, therefore it doesn't have backwards compatibility and is much cheaper, and as a result, sales have risen.

In other words, it's not because it's backwards compatible that's the problem, it's the fact that it doesn't have the enough games. Wait a few years, then it will have those games that you've been waiting for, plus it will be cheaper, and I bet more people will buy one, without complaining about doing it.

I bet if it was only £200, people wouldn't complain. So I think Sony have got the right idea, but they're just taking it slowly.

this is going to sounds fanboy'ism'ish (now is there such a word) but does that mean Sony are still behind Wii sales?

Maybe this is the start of something good or maybe it is just people getting the last of the 60Gb PS3s to sell on feaBay nearer Christmas for a huge profit?

I think well soon see when the 60Gbs have all sold out and only 40Gbs are left on shelfs. If there is a drop again you can guess what has happened.

Good luck Sony this time round you need it.

BTW my Jap PS3 was picked up in Hong Kong for £183 and no it doesn't play UK PS2 games but it was still £100 cheaper but only has a 20Gb HD, still want do I can care as I work in the PC trade and can upgrade to 160Gb for less than the £100 I saved.

Yeah theres a thing! the uk ps3 doesnt have the emotion chip inside it that the ps2 had, so why should it have a cost difference, all its doing is emulating the ps2 anyway. So why take it out?it doesnt make sence at all.

You hit the nail on the head, mate. Removing the Emotion chip from PS3 makes no freaking sense at all.

Sony will make crap excuses like 'rumble is last gen' and 'gamers are moving on from PS2 ' etc, but they aren't fooling me at all.

They never needed to mess about with the insides of PS3, all they had to do was cut the freaking price (like I have been saying here from when PS3 was released) and these same sales that we are seeing now would have happened. Sony think they are real smart now, after cheating everyone out of BC, but to be honest, seeing those high sales brings a sad tear to my eye, as many don't care enough to object such BC stupidity.

Congrats to new PS3 owners, but I have a bad feeling this latest debacle is gonna come back to bite them in their arse. Even if those games turn up, PS3 is still gonna have a very GC like existence, this generation.

I could care less about PS2 compatibility. If I want to play my old PS2 games I have my old console its just that simple. The fact that Sony is giving us the PS3 with Wi-fi, Bluetooth, and Friggin Blu-ray for so cheap is one of the greatest new technology deals I have ever heard of. I am purchasing 4 of these babies - 1 for my mum, 1 for my brothers family, 1 for my best friend (these will all be xmas gifts) and 1 for myself.

Sony is the simply the greatest!

This is big for Sony!! Although Microsoft, and Nintendo won't go away with their own innovative consoles, Sony should progress with innovations of their own to get more sales.

I have a 60 gig PS3 at home here and I have retired my PS2 (to my brother's house) and I have to say that I am not overly impressed by the BC anyway... I have only played FFXII on it but it seems that it ran (f**k loads) smoother on the PS2... what does that say? Maybe that FFXII is crap on it and most everything else is great but in my opinion get a 40gig, upgrade the HDD to a 250 and keep your PS2... whatever you do though, make sure you get a PS3... I just love it.
