In a real helicopter!

SEGA’s New Helicopter Game
Check this baby out! Imagine walking into your local arcade and seeing the new SEGA Helicopter ride. Air Rescue Pilot projects a realistic rescue sim featuring 3D images of Kyoto City, the surrounding mountains and noteworthy historical locations with an an immense 120 inch screen.

And not only that. The helicopter can take up to eight people, each mission-based game/ride lasts around five minutes, and it has three levels of difficulty. Flying around the skies of Kyoto has never been so much fun. Well, apart from if you pretend to be sky-walking around the same skies of Kyoto, which you can do at the local Nintendo-inspired and designed museum which we told you about yesterday!

Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely that you are going to see this incredible SEGA helicopter anywhere outside of Japan at any point in the near future.

SPOnG polled a number of random gamers earlier today (well, we asked around the office) to see if anyone thinks such an awesome educational game/ride might have a market in Europe or anywhere outside of Kyoto City Citizens Disaster Prevention Center.

“This is like a dream… I’ve always wanted to fly a real helicopter, but nobody’s ever really entrusted me with one before,” said Gavin. 'Thank God' thinks the rest of the team.

"It would be like Apolalypse Now, I'd skin-up, get Ride of the Valkyries playing on full blast and take the bastards out. No mercy," said Adam, clearly not thinking straight, as ever.

“It might help me get over my fear of flying, if I could experience the worst and most frightening possible helicopter flying experience ever, then I might finally agree to get on that Easyjet flight to Malaga that my girlfriend keeps bugging me about. Especially if it's anything like those 10p helicopter rides you got in arcades in the 80's. You know, the ones that went up and down. And then up. And then down again. And then...” opined Jay, the designer in the corner. Yes! We like that ‘run AT the problem’ attitude, Jay!

The fire-fighting flyer has been on exhibition at the Kyoto City Citizens Disaster Prevention Center for the last couple of weeks and admission is free.

Hmmmm, SPOnG wonders if Wakefield Council might consider using this for some 'educational use' in a local museum after Kyoto has done with it. Perhaps we’ll bring it up at the next Council meeting.

Sound like a good game. Perhaps Sega will produce smaller arcade offerings of it. Would be sweet to try out a full size helicopter though, something many of us might ever do.

Good to see Sega trying something different.

I'm mildly disappointed - not because this sounds in any way bad, mind. It's just that I was hoping for a UK release of Under Defeat in some form, be it arcade or otherwise. For the uninitiated, it's a vertically-scrolling helicopter shoot-'em-up by G.Rev (the chaps behind Border Down) which came out on the Dreamcast a couple of weeks ago. It's rather fantastic and I thought that the relatively quick sales (10,000 in the first week, with a reprint needed due to the whole lot selling out) had resulted in a quick decision to bring it to UK arcades or something.

I wouldn't mind this new helicopter thing being Japan-only, if it weren't so bloomin' difficult to import. Ho hum...
