Romero predicts ‘something interesting’ from Nintendo’s Revolution
Speaking recently to GameDaily, girlfriend-chasing Doom old boy John Romero has underlined Nintendo’s next-generation stance, hinting that there will indeed be something more on offer than a computer in a box.

Speaking of all things next-gen, Romero said, “Expect a ton of graphics of high quality. I don't see any revolutions in game design on the Xbox 2 and PlayStation 3, but we'll see something interesting on the Nintendo Revolution and the Nintendo DS is already doing some cool stuff with the dual screens. I truly respect Nintendo's forward thinking.”

Seemingly and somewhat understandably, Romero has been given some kind of brief by Nintendo outlining its base plans for the ever-entertaining Revolution and is offering what is perhaps the first confirmation that things will indeed be changing, hopefully for the better.

Expect all things Revolution, right here, as they break.

Wow. I thought Romero had be consigned to the history books after he quit EA having woken up the real possibilities of MMORPGs.

The Revolution gets more and more interesting. However we had the same kind of hype around the DS and the DS still isn't delivering the kind of innovative games we expected from it.

What's the point of adding a second screen if most companies are only going to put a map on it? If Nintendo are going to innovate and take risks they need to make sure that they can deliver the software to back it up, utilising the innovative aspects of the system. While the DS may be getting killer titles soon, this could be too late after it's weak launch line-up and the PSP looking so strong in Japan.

Again, the maessage to Ninty need to be that it needs to wake up and look at change in the industry. A movement away from the kiddle cartoon games of the 1990s to the more realistic games. These are now the system-shifting titles.

Oh, and graphics don't matter? Give me a break. They're the first thing, rightly or wrongly we look at when buying a system. Here's a conversation I happened to overhear today:
"Did you hear Nintendo are releasing a new handheld thing?"
"Yeah?"
"It's got the graphics halfway between the N64 and Gamecube."
"Not bad."
(Yes, that was a genuine conversation).

C'est la vie.

I think that's a little unfair on both DS and PSP since both have only been on sale for 1-3 months. True it helps to have killer aps at launch but i feel this is a lot harder to do on a hand held system. As I said before on here, give both a year before you start your witch hunts.

It's also very well you having a poke at Nintendo for thier kiddy games, but I really think that you have the preconception that all you'll see on DS is 2D games with icing on top. The majority of games for both will be from 2nd/3rd parties. Both DS and PSP will give you both 2D and 3D games. And I also really believe both are worth buying because they offer something unique to each system. This kind of barrier home consoles don't have.

As for the Revolution I'm sure E3 this year might be the best in years.

Sorry, I don't think I explained that very well. I'm saying that:
1) No-one is currently using the DS hardware to it's full potential.
2) For most people, graphics will be the first thing they see in a console. It will be the thing they judge it on initially, and thus is important. Would you buy a new console with NES graphics however good the games were?

Please don't bring up the 2D/3D thing! I have no problems with either 2D or 3D games. I believe that we will see mainly 3D games on the DS, however I just hope it's graphics are better than the N64's; some of those games were unplayable.

I def agree with you here. However, I will probably never buy a PSP.

Just wait until we see Microsoft Gizmondo 2 launch. That will change things.

Such insightful comments from Mr Romero.

I'd just like to say one thing; Diakatana

The guy wouldn't know innovation if it flew up his ass and popped outta is ears.

It was quite innovative.

It just sucked, like many other innovations.

Did it really bring anythying new to the genre? From memory it was just a straight up, by-the-numbers first person shooter.
