Two different reports claim totally different things.

Rumour Mill Churns into Overdrive: Which Next-Gen Console is More Powerful?
Depending on who you believe, the next Xbox will either be more or less powerful than the next PlayStation.

NowGamer has one story, quoting an "insider" that claims Microsoft has Sony vastly outgunned for the next-generation battle, with three System on Chip (SOC) devices that has the console itself being referred to as "three computers in one."

"On paper both systems are capable of 3.2TFlops of data, however the Oban blitter inside the Xbox 720 increases the speed at which data is transferred, meaning the Xbox Next is actually capable of 4.2TFlops," apparently. Just know that it wasn't us that called it the 'Xbox 720'.

Microsoft has spent more money on its next console, says NowGamer, and Sony's only real defence is an emphasis on supporting 4K televisions - but even then the image quality will be poorer as the next PlayStation will have to upscale. It was said that Sony increased the RAM of its next platform to 8GB... but...

"OBJECTION," comes the bellowing cry of rival site VG247. In this report, citing information leaked from CES, it's not Sony that has the 8GB RAM advantage, but in fact Microsoft. And it's Sony's machine that has more horsepower overall.

"The next PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops," VG247's report reads. "Conversely, the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, will be able to achieve 1.23 teraflops. If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.

"While PS4 will have greater grunt [than] 720, however, the Microsoft machine has significantly more RAM at 8Gb, we’ve been told." Sony's, by contrast, only has 4GB RAM. VG247 adds that both consoles will be able to run 100GB Blu-ray discs, and that both machines will launch in November this year.

What's amazing is that, even at this early stage, when the rumour mill is churning at its fastest, there's enough ammo for Xbox and PlayStation fanboys to pick a fight with. We expect many more playground scuffles in the run up to the official launches of the next generation.

If only these reports were written by people that had any clue whatsoever.

Examples:

"3.2TFlops of data" literally doesn't make any sense.

or

"the Microsoft machine has significantly more RAM at 8Gb, we’ve been told." Sony's, by contrast, only has 4GB RAM"

4GB = 32Gb, so if these numbers weren't just pulled out of someone's arse, they'd mean PS4 would have four times as much RAM as the 720.
