It’s girly handbags at ten paces as Nintendo and Microsoft put fanboy heads on and argue about two consoles that sold the same amount

Microsoft has issued a press release that disagrees with Nintendo’s recent claim that the GameCube outsold all other consoles at launch. Well surprise, surprise, we are truly shocked.

"The data clearly shows that Xbox is off to a torrid start," said Robbie Bach, Chief Xbox Officer at Microsoft. "Xbox sold out as soon as we launched, and we're selling systems as fast as we can produce them. More than 100,000 units a week are being delivered to retailers, so game players are likely to find Xbox systems throughout the holiday season. With one of the best launch line-ups ever, I understand why Xbox is the most sought-after gift for the holiday."

Microsoft clearly states that the Xbox outsold the GameCube at launch, it says, after two weeks on sale. It also says that it sold more games too. So there!

The bottom line is that there are loads of sales figures for the consoles being touted by both companies. Because each company, by engineering its own bunch of stats, is claiming victory, the truth has become unclear. It would appear to us, and we have pored over every release to be submitted, that both consoles have sold about the same amount at this point. The Xbox, with its head start, took an early lead, but was overtaken by strong early GameCube sales. Both consoles have been selling at an almost equal rate, following Microsoft’s re-stocking of Xbox hardware.

At this point in time, we reckon that Microsoft has shifted roughly 100,000 more consoles than Nintendo has up to now.

Three successful games machines now exist in the American market. And all everyone can do is argue over slight differences in sales figure. Aren’t they all missing the point?
