Puyo Puyo! It’s a Japanese Puzzle game!

Without the fat animal trapper at last!

Sega of Japan has released some new screens from its previously unannounced Game Boy Advance puzzler Puyo Puyo.

Puyo Puyo might not ring any bells initially, but take a look at the screen and imagine this for a minute. He’s big, red, fat and evil. He has a contraption which produces bad tempered pulses. That’s right, Puyo Puyo reached the height of its fame in the Western world in the guise of Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine.

The new Game Boy Advance version from Sega, minus the porky hedgehog botherer, is pictured here running in single, two-player and four-player battle modes.

For the uninitiated, this is a puzzle game in which the player must control the descent of various coloured beans. Whenever four beans of the same colour come into contact, they vanish. This causes any beans stacked above to fall and if they come into contact with others of the same colour, they also vanish. And so the puzzle game combo is born.

Puyo Puyo has been confirmed for release in Europe but no date has yet been given. We estimate early next year, but check back for an update.
