Nintendo Living in the Moment?

Reggie in modesty shocker

17 Mar 2008

Nintendo of America's CEO, the usually ebullient Reginald Fils-Aime, has astonished SPOnG with a dose of humility the like of which we've not seen in the video games world since... ever. Speaking to US game reporter Jeff Keighley at GDC Reggie actually came out and said:

"Every system has its moment. It just happens to be the moment for Wii and DS now."

What the...?

Yes, Nintendo would appear to be so comfortable with its current dominance of the hardware sales landscape that even Reggie can afford to be, well, realistic. He also made it clear that Nintendo was dealing with the supply issues that dogged it over Christmas, stating that the company is producing 1.8 million Wiis per month - "No one has ever done that level of production", says Reg.

Talking about Christmas (okay, "The Holidays"), Reggie also promises a game that gamers will like for late this year. Yes, that's what we said, well, what he said, "There’s going to be a big game for the holidays that gamers will want".

Now, we assume from this that he means a game that you don't have to play smiling like a Stepford Wife surrounded by your family. We hope he means some new intellectual property for the cutting edge of gaming rather than a rehash of an old Nintendo character.

The current money is on Donkey Kong though.

Yes its the time for Wii and DS...But what does Nintendo do for next gen? They have innovation with both products but with the DS they can always improve on the power of the handheld and redesign it and perhaps offer extra functionality but what of the Wii?

Would everyone go and get a a Wii 2 purely on a graphics upgrade? The Wii 2 will have to offer a lot more or do some new things imo for it to grab the market like it has this gen.

Personally I think next gen will be a big battle between Sony and Microsoft because the graphics will be very intense and this time most likely both consoles will have blu-ray drives, wi fi built in etc...So hardware wise will be neck and neck so it will mean lots of money will have to be thrown at developers to get exclusives but thats just me speculating.

You need to have more faith, Neosparke! No one thought Nintendo would give us a mature Zelda (after the brilliant Wind Waker), yet they delivered the goods.

The fact that Nintendo was willing to make Mario Galaxy epic with incredible graphics and orchestrated music (for a platform game!!!) has me salivating at what they have in store for the next Zelda.
