SPOnG’s just managed a very quick catch up with Dawn Paine, Nintendo UK’s exuberant Marketing Director, to quiz her on her first thoughts about the U.S. launch of Wii over the weekend just gone.

Paine told SPOnG, “The success… was phenomenal and is very encouraging. Hundreds of people queued up to purchase a Wii and fans weren't disappointed by the atmosphere at New York’s Time Square Toys ‘R’ Us and Los Angeles' Universal City Walk’s Gamestop.”

She continued, “With just over three weeks until launch, we are very excited about Wii arriving in the UK and look forward to a really successful launch. Whether you're a non-gamer or an avid gamer, Wii looks set to be top of all the Christmas lists this year, following in the footsteps of Nintendo DS as a groundbreaking market leader.”

Nintendo has certainly got a case for Number 1 Chrissy lister, given that it's got no competition in terms of new platforms.

It seems that Wii fans in New York City have been particularly spoiled, with SPOnG’s man on the ground in Manhattan just sending word that he’s bought another two consoles today, from Toys ‘R’ Us on Times Square. Sales assistants at the store informed him that they calculate to already have enough in stock for another week and a half.

All encouraging stuff. Though don't forget to head to Amazon tomorrow to pre-order your Wii in the UK; as it's highly likely that stocks over here will be far more limited come December 8th.

So by a 'quick catch-up,' you in fact mean pasting a press release and lying?

Ahhh.

No, that's not what we mean at all - we mean we got a direct response from Dawn Paine to a direct question that we asked of Dawn Paine.

I personally asked Nintendo's PR company, Cake PR, 2 direct questions relating to the US launch over the weekend and they sent me the answers you see in the news piece above.

If, as it seems, that they also chose to expand this into a press release, then I'd advise that you question them about their reasons behind doing that.

The reasons are obvious. It's because they're a PR company/the PR department for a company.
