EA Predicts $170 Wii Pricepoint

Matches analyst expectations. Might have read it on the Internet...

22 Aug 2006

Speaking in an interview published today, Electronic Arts executive VP and COO of EA's worldwide studios David Gardner hinted the Wii pricepoint was a done deal, pegging $170 for the new Nintendo machine, due for release at an unknown date in the coming months.

"I've heard in Japan that the price is about $170, but I don't know if the price has been set in Europe yet," he said. "Nintendo has come up with a very clever strategy. They've made a choice which is great for the consumer. Now we're going to have a choice whereby consumers can buy a Wii plus one other console."

Of course, you will have seen, recent gossip emerging from financial analysts in Japan also claimed the Wii will be $170 at launch. As we explained, using exact currency conversions, this translates to a mere £90, a shade over $170 for the US and 133 Euros. Though of course, should Nikko Citigroup's Japanese pricepoint be correct, the price will be adjusted for Europe, the UK and the US, most likely working against British gamers. Understand that in spite of our surging currency value, in real terms we are probably paying the cost of a few pints of Stella more than anyone else.

All of which hints that perhaps Gardner 'heard' about the $170 release date on the Internet...

Well, looks like that massive ultimo post we all contributed to over the weekend was for nothing, and I could very well be wrong in my initial assumptions. Still, I'm correct in that it'll be rounded up to €200 in Ireland.

Wow, I hope it's that cheap. I think it'll be the first console I'll ever buy at launch, and I'll probably go for 3 controllers and 2 or 3 games.

I just hope the games are actually revolutionary.

Hmmm, I definitely think that it'll be a nicer way to play. I can imagine being a lot more relaxed when playing a FPS. But, the games are just gonna be the same, aren't they? I mean, most of them. When the DS came out and everyone could see the potential but hadn't quite thought differently, and it was only after the first year that people started producing games that couldn't be played comfortably on another system. I think this is gonna be the same. Initially we'll be like, "Yeah, it's nice, but not revolutionary."

But then Ouendan will come out and we'll cack our pants and Dr. Kawashima'll get us to do mad shit with our wands and we'll all be like "lol ur da lvl1 h4x0r n00b"!!!
